Een plein in Assen voor Jumping Jack
Eind jaren zeventig, begin jaren tachtig was de motorsport enorm populair in Nederland. De Grote Drie (Boet van Dulmen, Wil Hartog en Jack Middelburg) wonnen in de 500 cc regelmatig de Grand Prix.
Jumping Jack Middelburg – zo genoemd omdat hij zo vaak naast z’n motor lag – won in 1980 de TT van Assen. Vier jaar later vloog hij tijdens een race in het Groningse Tolbert uit de bocht. Twee dagen daarna overleed Middelburg, nog geen 32 jaar oud. Portret van een motorcoureur die zacht en geliefd was naast de baan, maar bikkelhard en gevreesd als hij zijn motor besteeg.
